This blog shows the photographic progress of my builds

Album: Gamela Carmina

Of all my builds this was my favorite.

I will be reproducing my build log in its entirety. It was recently lost when the ship modeling forum I attended shut down. It is currently a discontinued kit so I will show the plans should anyone wish to try to scratch build one of their own.

  • ‘Gamella Carmina’ By OcCre (discontinued)
  • Plank on bulkhead construction.
  • Length: 15-¼” Height: 7-7/8”
  • Scale: 1:15/ Entry Level
  • Price: $79.99 (I bought on sale for: $40.98 with shipping.)
  • My Skill Level: Hmmm….rank amateur.

Here’s a brief description from the OcCre site:

“Gamellas” are, along with “dornas”, the most emblematic of the popular Galician embarkations. With snubbed bow and stern and a flat bottom they can be either rowed or sailed. Completely built in pine they were traditionally painted red, using a mixture that served as both careening and paint. Nowadays they can be found painted in a variety of bright and cheerful colours. The name comes from the “gamella”, i.e. trough or basin, used for feeding animals. The “Carmiña” is outstanding above all because of the ease with which she can be brought on shore and her dimensions, with a length of over 16 feet and a beam of about 6. For anchoring the traditional “poutadas”, or rocks, are still used.”

I originally purchased this kit for my second build. I don’t count the Mini Mamoli Bluenose even though I learned a great deal from its construction. (I felt that, even though it was fun to construct, it was too easy for a first build.) After reading the description and seeing the wonderful wood supplied with the kit, I decided to build this boat as if it had been handed down from father to son over the course of a few generations. You’ll notice as I build that edges and corners will be ‘rounded over’ to display the effects of Time & Tide. I hope that this extra care will help the ‘Carmina’ to inspire a few imaginations to take up this brilliant hobby.

When I first unpacked the kit I was very impressed with how everything looked. The wood was not warped or damaged. The instructions were very clear and the build photos were in color. This is an excellent kit for any first timer. OcCre Rocks! Sorry….lost myself for a moment.

In the next post are a few photos of the kit and instructions:
